MTTR vs MTBF — the boring math

NO NordGryd Operations ·29 Mar 2026 ·9 min read
[ OPERATIONS ]

Two acronyms that decide your uptime, and the one most teams optimise by accident.

Mean time to repair and mean time between failures pull in different directions, and most teams optimise one while neglecting the other.

Chasing MTTR alone gets you fast at fixing things that should never have broken. Chasing MTBF alone gets you reliable assets and a team that has forgotten how to respond.

The number that matters is uptime, and it falls out of both. Track them together or you are flying half-blind.
